Why This Reference Exists
Printed Freeport directories ended, yet the source records remain in separate systems. The Stephenson County Supervisor of Assessments and Clerk and Recorder maintain property and land-record routes. Illinois law controls voter and vital-record access. Older city directories, newspapers, microfilm, and family files are held by the Freeport Public Library and state archives. We bring the verified search tools, office contacts, collection dates, and access rules together for Freeport research.
What We Provide
- Pages by angle: the street directory (address-keyed records), the city directory (the historical shelf), and the resident lookup (one-person searches)
- Official keepers: the assessor, Clerk and Recorder, Circuit Clerk, elections desk, vital-record offices, and library local-history room
- Walkthroughs: how to trace who lives on a street, how to read a directory entry, how to follow a household across the decades
- Access rules: what Illinois law opens, what remains restricted, and how to approach the proper custodian when a record is not online
Limits of Our Role
This is a privately run reference site. It is not connected with the City of Freeport, a Stephenson County department, an Illinois agency, a court, or a library. Those boundaries matter:
- We cannot confirm whether a named person now lives in Freeport
- We cannot pull, certify, or change any record on your behalf
- We cannot add anyone to, or remove anyone from, any roll or database
- We cannot give legal advice about a record or a dispute
- We cannot promise that every coverage year, link, or office detail here is current at this moment
Only the custodian office can confirm, certify, or correct a record. Nothing found through this site may be used for credit, employment, tenant, or insurance decisions.
